Visiting Cádiz, Spain
Cádiz was the second stop on our honeymoon in October 2022, after Seville. We stayed in a resort in the province Cádiz, about a half hour from the city, so were able to make a day trip into the city with our rental car.
Where we ate in Cádiz
We only spent a few hours in the city Cádiz and ate most of our meals at the resort, which was in the province Cádiz, but here are my recommendations for the area.
Mercado Central Cádiz: Vendors sell meat, fish, and produce alongside a ton of tapas stands. On a Saturday afternoon bar stools were full of groups of friends drinking wine and beer and enjoying various tapas. A great place for a snack or even a meal.
Bar La Tabernita: We didn’t end up eating here, but it was on my list and also recommended by our tour guide.
Taberna Casa Manteca: Just like Bar La Tabernita, we didn’t eat here but it was on my list and recommended by our tour guide.
Heladeria El Limonero: Delicious ice cream on a beautiful plaza! It’s open seasonally, and we happened to be there on the last week in October.
Atripico: You wouldn’t go here if you were staying in the city, but one night when we needed a break from tapas and the hotel, we drove here for Latin food. It was delicious!
What we did in Cádiz
Cádiz city
The majority of our few hours in Cádiz was spent on another walking tour! We booked through Cadizfornia Tours (awful name, but good tour!). They offer about three tours a day on a “pay what you wish” model. Like in Seville, our tour guide was knowledgeable and personable. The only spot I would recommend visiting that they don’t take you on is Jardines de Alameda Apodaca on the north end of the city.
If you don’t want to take a tour, check out the places they stop so you can add them to your list, especially the Roman Theater and Mercado Central Cádiz. The city is small and full of narrow, windy streets seeped in history, so it’s worth spending time walking around, either on your own or on a tour.
The coast
Since we had a rental car, we had the flexibility to drive up and down the coast one day, stopping at various viewpoints, walking paths and even a little town (Conil de la Frontera). If you have the time, or are traveling between cities, I recommend making some stops along the way.
Where we stayed in Cádiz
We stayed in the province Cádiz, not the city, at Gran Meliá Sancti Petri. The hotel is beautiful, the staff so attentive, and the views amazing, all for a portion of the price for the same type of resort you may find in, let’s say, Hawaii. We opted to include breakfast in our stay, which was a large buffet with something for everyone, but not any other meals, which was the right choice for us.
