Visiting Madrid, Spain

For our honeymoon in October 2022, we booked a very last minute trip to Spain, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t do all my usual research! Here’s where we ate and what we did in Madrid, our last stop of three. View the full itinerary here.

Where we ate and drank in Madrid

We had some of the best meals in Madrid, mainly because there’s more variety given it’s a bigger city. We barely made a dent on my list and will have to go back!

  • La Barraca: Known for Valencian paella, this restaurant did not disappoint. Make a reservation in advance.

  • Fayer: This Argentine/Israeli restaurant made for a unique menu. Everything was delicious. I recommend a reservation here as well.

  • Federal Café: Perfect for a healthier breakfast. We had a chia bowl and eggs.

  • San Miguel Market: If you can stand the crowds, this market is worth it to try different tapas from the numerous stands.

  • Mistura Ice Cream: Not my favorite ice cream stop, but it was pretty good and worth a visit since they have multiple locations around the city.

  • Del Diego Cocktail Bar: We stopped here before La Barraca (they’re on the same street) for a drink and some snacks (potato chips and olives). The drinks were well made, and even my mocktail was delicious.

  • Monasterio Del Corpus Christi: To buy cookies from cloistered nuns, who manage to run a business without ever seeing their customers, visit Monasterio Del Corpus Christi. Ring the buzzer and once inside follow the hallway. You’ll end at a window with a lazy susan that doesn’t let you see who or what is on the other side. Order your cookies selecting from the Spanish/English menu on the wall, put your money on the lazy susan, and wait for your cookies and change to come back around. Such a unique experience!

What we did in Madrid

  • Surprise surprise, we did another walking tour! We booked this tour with Lexi through Airbnb experiences and, like the other tours, we were not disappointed. Lexi went above and beyond and took us to Monasterio Del Corpus Christi to buy cookies from the cloistered nuns. We had very little time in Madrid, so this tour took us to all the hot spots in a short time, including Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace. Plus, Lexi had a long list of her personal recommendations for the city.

  • Prado Museum: There are many many museums to choose from in Madrid, and we opted to visit Museo Nacional del Prado, which is the main Spanish national art museum. We went after our walking tour, so some of the pieces actually made more sense to us after learning bits of history from Lexi.

  • Retiro Park: We didn’t have time to go very deep into this enormous park, but what we saw was beautiful. You could easily spend an afternoon getting lost in there.
